Must read!
If you like Snarry, HP slash fanfiction, or simply Severus Snape, you've got to read this one!
Title: Reconciling Lily's Eyes
Author:
persepolis130
Pairing: Snarry
Rating: NC-17
Length: novel (11 chapters)
Warnings: explicit Snape/Harry, Harry/Ginny, spoilers for DH
Summary: Had Harry known bonding with his former professor would lead him to three different countries, a hastily-planned wedding and his pants around his ankles in Snape's sitting room, he wouldn't have quit his day job. Or... maybe he would've...
First, the characters are great. Severus is an unpleasant, sarky bastard who doesn't give an inch, right until the end. Harry is pig-headed, inarticulate and navigates by instinct and emotions. Hermione drives me crazy by knowing Harry better than he knows himself. Even Ginny is potraiyed really well, which makes it perfectly easy to dislike her.
Second, it's absolutely hilarious. The wedding! And the American students! I laughed until I was crying.
And that's something that makes the story rec-worthy in my eyes. I don't like HP stories set in America. Out of the many I've read I like two -
pir8fancier's Snape: The Home Fries Nazi and this one. Because America is really nothing more than the background. I never got the feeling that here's an author who Mary Sues their hometown/fav place/whatever in the USA. Instead,
persepolis130 gave Salem its very own magic. I loved the school. And the students. May all Americans forgive me for saying this but the kids are so absolutely American it's hilarious. Why they like to play Quodpot? "We're Americans. We like to blow shit up."
However, what makes the story unique is the author's treatment of Severus non-existent beauty and Snarry sex. Because Severus isn't glamoured in any way in this story. He's a middle-aged man who is really unattractive. You won't find Harry making speeches at him about "No, you aren't handsome, but your eyes are so intense and your voice is so velvety and your hands are so elegant!" (Who talks like that in RL, anyway?) This Harry is more likely to tell Severus he's an ugly old man who needs to shower more often. It's refreshing. And it's also really lovely, because under the ugliness you find love. Ditto, the sex. It's disgusting and awkward and hot.
Perhaps I'm reading too much into the story. But the longer I think about it, the more it seems to me that there are two stories: one that jumps at you, the hilarious one, where Severus and Harry throw dishes at each other; and a quiet one that hides under all the laughter and dishes and speaks of love. One that leaves the reader with a feeling that's "oddly comforting, and full-feeling, like nestling animals."
Go read it. ^-^
