How to Pass Your Defence Against the Dark Arts Exam
The sixth-year students crowded in front of the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom were waiting nervously. Some were whispering under their breath, repeating incantations. Others practised wand movements with shaking hands. All of them were paler than students about to be examined usually were.
This year, Professor Potter had announced, the exam would be a practical one. He would duel each student – separately, behind the closed door of his classroom – to see how good their Defence work was.
So far, three students had had to be taken to the Hospital Wing. And they had only reached the letter M.
*
The door to the classroom opened. Heads snapped up and eyes widened as Scorpius Malfoy stepped out. The students scanned him worriedly.
He didn’t look hurt, only flushed. His hair was mussed and his eyes sparkled. He smiled at his classmates, smoothing down his untidy robes.
‘Excellent performance, Mr Malfoy.’ Professor Potter had appeared in the doorway. ‘Creative approach. Clever use of distractions. Quick reactions. Very good.’
Scorpius smiled. ‘Thank you, sir.’
Professor Potter nodded. ‘Next.’
The door closed.
‘How was it?’ an anxious classmate asked.
Scorpius winked at her. ‘Easy.’
Then he swaggered down the corridor, humming with satisfaction.
