Tom Riddle and the Half-Blood Prince

Yes, I'm procrastinating. Still, I think it's interesting.

The Time-Turner Question in PoA

This thesis is killing me! Seriously. I just changed the the entire outline. Again. Argh.

Anyway, I'm fighting my way through Prisoner of Azkaban, and the Time-Turner thing made me wonder. You see, as Michael Maar points out in his book, how could Snape not have known about the Time-Turner? When Sirius Black mysteriously vanishes from Professor Flitwick's locked office, and Dumbledore all but outright tells him what happened ('Unless you suggest that Harry and Hermione are to be in two places at once', p. 306 in my edition), how could Snape not know? Hermione has been using the thing for the entire year. He's bound to have heard something about it in the staff room. Or, if Snape was too blinded by his fury, what about Cornelius Fudge? Whose Ministry, you know, approved Hermione's use of the Time Turner. Shouldn't either of them at least suspect something?

So here's what I think )

Oh, well.

On a different note, there might be more drabbles. Shout if you want me to post them.

Re-reading Harry Potter: ironic foreshadowing Philosopher's Stone

Aren't they ironic, those little things you notice in hindsight?

Chapter 7, The Sorting Hat:

"A horrible thought struck Harry, as horrible thoughts always do when you're very nervous. What if he wasn't chosen at all?"

I couldn't help laughing at re-reading this. Poor Chosen One. ^-^

Chapter 15, The Forbidden Forest:

Harry to Ron and Hermione: "Firenze saved me, but he shouldn't have done ... Bane was furious ... he was talking about interfering with what the planets say is going to happen ... They must show that Voldemort's coming back ... Bane thinks Firenze should have let Voldemort kill me ... I suppose that's written in the stars as well."

Um. Yes. To both. ^-^

Though it makes me wonder at the events in Deathly Hallows. I mean, if the stars predict that Voldemort will kill Harry in the Forbidden Forest, what made the centaurs change their mind and fight in the Battle of Hogwarts? Hagrid yelled at them for not helping. A little later, they act as the seventh cavalry. Why would they fight, if what the planets had told them had come to pass? Or did the stars tell them other things, like go fighting when Harry's dead, that haven't been mentioned or that I missed? Hm.

A Very Interesting Essay on Harry Potter and Sexuality

So, I read this essay. There was one part in it that had me grinning and snorting in turns. It’s an interesting interpretation, though rather hilarious at times (not to say ridiculous).

Anyway, I thought I’d share it with you. It’s quoted from Casey Cothran, “Lessons in Transfiguration: Allegories of Male Identity in Rowling’s Harry Potter Series” in Scholarly Studies in Harry Potter: applying academic methods to a popular text, ed. by Cynthia Whitney Hallett.

I’ve copied it and only changed the layout a bit to make it easier to read. Have fun.

Reading Harry Potter

I started re-reading the Harry Potter books for my thesis. Really interesting what things I notice, now that I’m not reading the story but the structure of the books.

cut because I really noticed a lot of things )
